In recent years, generative AI has emerged as a powerful tool with the potential to revolutionize various aspects of our lives, from automating tasks to assisting with creative endeavors. Its ability to generate human-quality text has opened up new possibilities for enhancing productivity and streamlining workflows. In the realm of job applications, generative AI can play a significant role in crafting compelling resumes and cover letters that capture the attention of potential employers. By leveraging AI’s ability to analyze job descriptions and tailor resumes accordingly, individuals can significantly increase their chances of landing their desired job.
A resume is a concise overview of an individual’s skills, experience, and education, typically tailored to a specific job application. It highlights relevant qualifications and accomplishments to demonstrate suitability for the position. In contrast, a CV (Curriculum Vitae) is a more comprehensive document that provides a detailed account of an individual’s academic and professional background. It often includes publications, research projects, and teaching experience, making it more suitable for academic or research-oriented positions.
As employers increasingly seek ways to efficiently filter through a large pool of job candidates, CVs are becoming more prevalent in the hiring process. A well-written CV can serve as a powerful tool to showcase your academic achievements, research contributions, and professional expertise, potentially setting you apart from other applicants and enhancing your chances of securing job offers.
In this post, we will walk through the process of using AI (Google Bard) to help us construct a CV and a resume for a specific job posting.
WARNING: Be wary of sharing sensitive information with AI models. These models are trained on vast amounts of data, and anything you input can potentially be incorporated into their training process. This includes your personal information, financial data, or confidential business information to potential misuse.
Generating a CV and Resume
We will use a series of prompts to initiate a conversation with the AI. This conversation will consist of prompting the AI to ask relevant questions to help construct our CV. After constructing the CV, we will prompt the AI to use the same information in the CV to construct a resume.
The process of having a conversation with the AI builds a context around our goal. The context forms the collection of ideas, statements, instructions around how we want our CV and resume constructed and what information they contain.
Here is how the conversation will be structured:
- Submit starting prompt – this describes our process and what we are asking the AI to do
- Submit details about the job posting we want to apply for
- Prompt the AI to ask us questions – our answers will add to the AI context – this information will be used to generate the resume and CV
- Ask AI to generate CV for the job posting
- Ask AI to generate resume for the job posting
NOTE:
- Sections bordered in red are prompts from the user to the AI
- Sections bordered in blue are responses from the AI
This creates a good starting point for further modifications. We can copy and paste this resume and CV into a word editing program and add our personal information such as name, address, university etc…
Requesting Information Changes
Google Bard generates a pretty good starting point for our CV and resume. It seems to have made up some information however this is easy to change in any word editing program. You can also instruct Bard to change information by prompting it.
I will only copy the part of the response that includes our requested changes:
Requesting Format Changes
We can ask the AI to re-write our CV in different styles. In the example below, we ask the AI to re-write the CV in the style of a letter.
Preparing For The Interview
At this point, the AI knows our experience and what job we are applying to. We can leverage this by asking the AI to generate a list of bullet points we can use during an interview.
Conclusion
AI is a valuable tool that can assist job seekers in crafting compelling resumes, CVs, and talking points for interviews. While AI cannot replace human creativity and insight, it can provide a solid foundation upon which to build these essential job search documents.
By leveraging AI’s ability to analyze data and identify patterns, job seekers can ensure that their resumes and CVs are tailored to specific job requirements, highlighting their most relevant skills and experience.
Additionally, AI can help job seekers prepare for interviews by generating potential questions and providing practice answers, boosting their confidence and preparedness.
Ultimately, AI serves as a valuable tool in the job search process, empowering individuals to present themselves as strong candidates and increase their chances of landing their dream job.
